As a Physiotherapist and Pilates Teacher I often test people’s balance. They are often surprised when they try and do something they assume they can do with ease, but in fact turns out to be a little harder than they thought it would be.
Why don’t you have a go at challenging your balance? [Safety disclaimer!] Stand on one leg if it is safe to; and close your eyes. It’s pretty tricky isn’t it?
Balance is something that most of us take for granted. It is something we develop throughout our lives, evolving with us as we age. Basic balance is innate, however some of us are able to improve our balance skills through exercise and practice. Who doesn’t love watching a tightrope walker; whilst we all gaze in awe at how they can possibly do it without embarrassing themselves as most of us would!
Some people aren’t lucky enough to be able to take their balance for granted as they suffer from the horrible, nauseating, head-spinning sensation of various vestibular disorders.
