Volunteering is a wonderful way to offer your time to help others. The benefits to you include utilising your skills or learning new ones, meeting new people, challenging yourself, making a difference to your community and others lives, benefiting your mental and physical health, taking on a new challenge, sharing it with family and friends. It could be an hour or two a month, a project abroad, a longer term community project, the options are endless.
I started volunteering at my local hospice some years ago, providing massage. I gained so much pleasure from giving relaxing treatments to people going through a challenging time in their lives. It was full of laughter, friendship, tears, wonderful stories and mutual benefit. I have volunteered at local sporting events massaging tired legs after the challenge of a run. I’ve also spent time leading ponies for the wonderful riding for the disabled, allowing young adults and children to experience feeling the joy of being with horses.
There are many local, national and international groups looking for volunteers no matter how much time you are able to help out. Check out your local press, library or internet for more information and start your own fun challenge this year. Do let us know what you decide to volunteer for.
